2018 is the 86th year that the Embroiderers’
Guild has published Embroidery. It’s an
extraordinary feat, not solely within craft
publishing but the industry in general,
and the title remains an important part
of Guild activities. Our March issue lines
up an amazing range of contemporary
textile talent – from established artists to
newcomers. Two of our featured artists
use the ‘Irish’, an industrial Singer sewing
machine capable of producing a wide,
luscious satin stitch, which in the right
hands can imitate hand embroidery
beautifully. As you’ll see, Kate Wells and
Rhiannon Williams both use the Irish in
very different ways to extraordinary
effect. Our ‘pioneers of embroidery’ series
started with Jan Beaney in September,
and continues this month with the author
and artist Anne Morrell, who reflects
upon her long career as a selection of her
hand embroidered works go on show at
Goldsmiths. Caitlin Hinshelwood’s work
caught our eye at her recent exhibition,
both for her colourful hangings and for
her research into the fascinating stories
of women mill workers, on which they
are based. Meanwhile the self-taught
embroiderer Paulina Bartnik has gained an
online following for her acutely observed
hand embroidered images of birds. Last but
not least, it was high time we interviewed
Anne Kelly about her fascinating journey,
which took her from Canada to the UK
and from teaching to
becoming an artist. Each

shares their story –
