Manhattan
Większość turystów kojarzy Nowy Jork przede wszystkim z Manhat-
tanem, który jest najmniejszym, ale przy tym najbogatszym i najgę-
ściej zaludnionym okręgiem miasta. Zamieszkuje go ponad 1,6 mln
osób. To wyspa o długości 21,6 km i szerokości 3,7 km (w najszer-
szym miejscu). Jej powierzchnia wynosi ok. 58,8 km². W skład dziel-
nicy wchodzi też kilka małych wysp, m.in.: Randalls Island, Wards
Island i Roosevelt Island na rzece East River oraz Governors Island
i Liberty Island w zatoce.
Manhattan umownie dzieli się na trzy części: Downtown (Dolny
Manhattan), Midtown (Środkowy) i Upper (Górny) z 5
th
Ave. stano-
wiącą granicę pomiędzy częścią wschodnią (East Side) a zachodnią
(West Side).
Tu mieszczą się najwspanialsze galerie, muzea i teatry, a także przed-
stawicielstwa setek firm i banków. Na Time Square mieszkańcy mia-
sta i turyści witają Nowy Rok. Na Wall Street, gdzie znajduje się New
York Stock Exchange (Nowojorska Giełda Papierów Wartościowych),
podejmowane są decyzje wpływające na finanse całego świata. Na
Manhattanie ulokowano też siedzibę ONZ.
