YAMATO
Built for the Paciic theatres of the Second World War, IJN
Yamato,
was at the
time, the most powerful battleship to have been built. The behemoth of a ship
bristled with cannon and machine gun power and was heavily protected with up
to 20in of armour in places. If it hadn’t have been for the presence of aircraft
carriers – which went on to rule the seas –
Yamato
may have been the force to
reckon with in the Paciic theatres for longer.

Yamato’s
keel was laid down
on 4 November.
Yamato
was launched on
8 August with Captain
Miyazato Shutoku in
command.
She was commissioned into
the Imperial Japanese Navy
(IJN) on 16 December.

SPECIFICATION
Yamato
was 801ft long, had a beam of
121ft, a draught of 36ft and a surface
displacement of 72,800 tons. She
was propelled by 12 Kampon boilers
which fed 4 steam turbines developing
150,000shp while driving 4 propellers.
She had a speed of 27kts, a range of
6,210nm and carried a crew of 2,767.
FIREPOWER
Yamato’s
original armament in 1941,
was 9x 18.1in Type 94 main guns, 12x
6.1in guns, 12x 5in guns, 24x 25mm
anti-aircraft cannons and 4x 13.2mm
anti-aircraft machine guns.

PROTECTION
Yamato
was very heavily armoured,
up to 20in in places. The main guns
were housed in three heavy armoured
turrets. She had a very strong arc
welded inner seal and the battleship
featured a number of damage control
sections under the waterline.

Yamato
served as the lagship of the Combined
Fleet and was at the Battle of Midway but was
never within range of using her main guns.

Although
Yamato
was at the
Battle of the Philippine Sea
in June, she played no part in
the conlict. But, she did get
to ire her main guns for the
irst time at the Battle of Leyte
Gulf in October, during which
she helped destroy the aircraft
carrier USS
Gambier Bay.
Yamato
embarked on a
suicide mission with nine
other Japanese ships
against the Allied forces
engaged in the Battle of
Okinawa. Her mission was
to beach off the island
providing an unsinkable gun
emplacement. But the leet
was spotted by United States
Navy aircraft and came under
attack.
From the irst attack at 12.37,
to the massive explosion at
14.23,
Yamato
was hit by at
least 11 torpedoes and six
bombs. Estimates say that of
her 3,332 crew, 3,055 were
killed.

THE END
Yamato’s
last mission was to be
sacriiced in an attempt to provide
a permanent, stationary gun
emplacement on the beach of Okinawa,
which was under attack from the Allied
forces.
Codenamed (Ten-Go),
Yamato
and nine other ships set sail for the
Japanese island, but unfortunately the
leet was spotted by American Navy
planes before reaching the island, and
came under attack.
In the irst round of attacks,
Yamato
was hit by conventional bombs, armour
piercing bombs, rockets and cannon ire.
Uncontrollable ires broke out and during
the second attack, she encountered more
bombs and torpedoes. Heavily damaged,
Yamato
started to list and the crew
abandoned ship.
As ires spread rapidly, a massive
ammunition explosion – which was
seen up to 120 miles away – sank the
vessel, with an estimated loss of around
3,000 crew.

Wreckage believed to be that

Yamato,
were found 180ml
southwest of Kyushu at a depth of
1,120ft and the ship was broken into
two main pieces.
The Yamato Museum opened
and its centrepiece is an
86ft model of the battleship
Yamato.
Yamato
hit by a bomb during the Battle of the Sibuyan
Sea in 1944, she survived without serious damage.
