Week 4 to 9 – Number: Fractions
Equivalent Fractions
Notes and Guidance
Children recap on learning from year 4. They explore equivalent
fractions using models and concrete representations.
They use models to make the link to multiplication and division.
Children will then be able to apply the abstract method to find
equivalent fractions.
It is important children have the conceptual understanding before
moving in to just using an abstract method.

Fold on piece into two equal pieces.
Fold the other into eight equal pieces.

Use the models to write equivalent fractions.
