WELCOME
The world’s nuclear arsenal
is today estimated to number
between 10,000 and 15,000
weapons – a huge gure, but
far lower than the 60,000
stockpiled during the 1980s.
Yet the threat of nuclear war has returned to the
forefront of global politics in recent months, most
notably since North Korea claimed to have nally
achieved its ambition of producing a weapon that
would t on an intercontinental missile – accompanied
by an escalation in the nation’s bellicose rhetoric.
This was matched by the pronouncements of US
president Donald Trump. (“My rst order as president
was to renovate and modernise our nuclear arsenal,”
he tweeted in August. “It is now far stronger and
more powerful than ever before.”)
Despite these and other tensions, no major interna-
tional conict has been fought since 1945.

Another change since the 1980s – in much of the
western world, at least – is social acceptance of homo-
sexuality. Yet, as Brian Lewis explores from page 68,

history now appear alien, and aspects of some histori-
cal relationships seem hard to justify when viewed
through modern eyes. Yet they may still have some-
thing to teach us about sexuality in the 21st century.
