Hitler.
"I
was
numb
with
fear
of
what
I
was
about
to
encounter,"
Alvarado
recalled.
He
had
good
reason
to
be
afraid.
The
slaughter
began
the
moment
Private
Alvarado
landed
on
the
beach.
"Shells
[were]
bursting
around
us,
bullets
whizzing
by,"
he
recalled.
"At
the
water's
edge,
I
tripped
over
several
dead
GIs
Bodies
were
everywhere!"
The
surf
was
running
red
with
blood.
And
D-Day
had
just
begun.
