Last year was a big year for the Savage family. We sponsored four shooters to compete in the F Class
World Championships in Bisley, England, with high hopes that they would fare well with the Savage
Model 12 rifles we provided them. When the competition was over, Team Savage had exceeded not
only our expectations, but the lofty objectives they had set for themselves as well. Shooting standard
factory rifles, they literally out-shot the best long-range shooters in the world, most of whom were
shooting expensive custom guns costing thousands of dollars more.

While we only sent four actual shooters to that event, it must be said that there were more than 300
proud Savage employees who were with them in spirit – dedicated employees who can take pride
in making a product that is world class. In fact, Team Captain Stan Pate shot the whole event with a
rifle personally signed by nearly every employee at our Westfield centerfire facility. There is no better
rifle to display on the cover of a catalog than this “Signature Rifle” – it speaks volumes about this
company and the people who work here.

The accuracy of a rifle can be looked at like a complex equation. The sum of the parts determines the
overall accuracy. No single element of the equation is independent of another. The most accurate
barrel in the world is nothing more than a metal pipe if it’s not properly married to the action and
a perfectly joined barrel and action depend on proper bedding (see page 5 for details) to deliver
pinpoint accuracy.

Because the Savage floating bolt
head is designed to allow a few
thousandths of an inch of move-
ment, it can adjust itself for a
perfect fit only typically found
with hand-lapped locking lugs.
Typically, headspace (the distance from the face of the closed bolt of a firearm to the surface in the
barrel chamber on which the cartridge case seats) is discussed in terms of what is acceptable in
order to maintain safety in the face of insufficient or excessive headspace and the resulting pres-
sures. Industry standards (SAAMI) for firearms and ammunition are set within acceptable tolerance
ranges for safety and, clearly, Savage is committed to safety. However, our commitment to accuracy
has caused us to look at headspace in another light.
There is a science to building an accurate barrel. The bulk of that science leans on machinery
and experienced operators. The straightness of the bore, the uniformity of the rifling geometry,
the concentricity of the chamber and the exactness of the crown all rely on consistent, dependable
and specialized machinery. Equally important are experienced, trusted and specialized operators.
Savage proudly employs both.
For this reason, each and every Savage centerfire barrel — from the one going on a Team Savage
competitor’s F Class rifle to the one going on your kid’s first deer rifle — is checked and if needed,
hand straightened by the same person and with the same commitment to perfection.
Rather than working to fall within an acceptable range, Savage engineered a lock-nut system that
allows each and every single action to attach to its specific barrel with absolute zero tolerance for un-
paralleled accuracy. While each barrel-to-action union is 100% precise, Savage went one step further
to assure 100-percent locking lug engagement. A floating bolt head enables complete engagement of
the bolt face with the cartridge.
That’s consistency. And what is accuracy if not consistency?

The energy released when a cartridge is fired creates a series of harmonic waves that travel the length
of the barrel. While it may sound counter intuitive, the movement that accompanies these waves
factors into the accuracy equation and must necessarily be embraced. For these reasons, any rifle with
respectable accuracy will have a “free floating” barrel and a firmly bedded action. “Free floating” is an
absolute. Either the barrel is untouched by the stock or it’s not. However, a bedded action can come in
many shapes and forms.
All of the accuracy advantages built into a Savage barrel, action and stock are delivered into the
shot by the shooter himself. The engagement point? The Savage AccuTrigger™. Most triggers found
in firearms produced today have a very heavy pull. The reason is quite simple: liability. Because
manufacturers cannot afford to build firearms with triggers that could accidentally discharge, they’ve
resorted to heavy trigger pulls. Even though factory triggers can usually be adjusted to some extent,
such adjustments can create unsafe conditions and usually void the warranty. Savage challenged its
engineering team to design a completely new trigger system that gives shooters what they want – an
easily adjustable trigger with a crisp release and no creep. This project took several years, but our
revolutionary AccuTrigger TM meets all of these objectives.
Traditionally, an action is secured to the stock by one or two screws that pull the action directly
downward into the stock. This bedding method provides excellent rigidity on a single, linear plane —
up and down.
The AccuTrigger™ has a
single adjustment location
The Savage AccuTrigger TM gives the flexibility to set trigger pull to individual preferences without
having to pay a gunsmith to adjust it. Even when adjusted to its lowest setting, the AccuTrigger TM is
completely safe. When maintained and adjusted as intended, the AccuTrigger TM cannot accidentally
discharge during normal use, even if it is jarred or dropped. Furthermore, the crisp, clean, light trigger
pull allows the shooter to maximize the rifle’s accuracy potential. A teardrop three-position safety is
an additional feature on centerfire rifles with the AccuTrigger TM . This provides better acquisition of the
safety button and operates more smoothly and quietly.
The new AccuStock TM from Savage consists of a rigid rail system that is firmly embedded in the stock
throughout the length of the fore-end of the rifle. Rather than unidirectionally engaging the action at
one or two points, the AccuStock TM engages the action three dimensionally along its entire length.
The AccuTrigger TM is designed with an integrated AccuRelease TM that must be completely depressed
or the rifle cannot fire. While the trigger is being pulled, the AccuRelease TM is intentionally depressed,
which unblocks the sear and allows the rifle to discharge. Adjusting the AccuTrigger TM is easy. Simply
remove the stock and rotate the return spring using the tool supplied with the rifle. The AccuTrigger TM
has a single adjustment location and is designed so it cannot be adjusted below the minimum setting.

Anyone who shoots a rifle expects accuracy. But there is a special breed of accuracy enthusiast that

12 Benchrest is for 1000-yard benchrest competitions. It has a 29” ultra-heavy barrel, dual-port action
and Target AccuTrigger. Its laminated stock features a wide forend and a buttstock that is sculpted for
a bench rest. Chambered in .308 Win, 6.5 x 284 Norma, and 6mm Norma BR. The Palma ® is for the
