So much is made of Netfl ix’s formula for television
(it feels strange to call it that; how about ‘episodic
storytelling’?), giving audiences a steady fl ow of
things that keep them streaming episode after
episode. Instead of the sole focus being on an end-
of-episode cliffhanger or balls-to-the-wall season fi nale to get
you coming back, Netfl ix does all those things, but it also keeps
spooning in doses of shock, sex and comedy, keeping you
watching second by second instead of hour by hour.
HBO, then, has much more in common with Netfl ix than
it does with any conventional network. Game Of Thrones
has proven to be narrative MSG, keeping you entranced with
torture, tragedy, twists, turns, sex and death. Sure, George RR
Martin’s original text is the blueprint for Game Of Thrones’ jaw-
agape story developments, but showrunners David Benioff and
DB Weiss have cranked it up, thrown in more boobs and blood,
and redistributed it in the name of must-see TV.
It’s what gives the show such power and makes the boxset
as much a cause for celebration as the broadcast: power that
few other genre shows match, although American Horror Story
and The Walking Dead come pretty damn close; power that
demands you cancel all appointments and just binge.
Game Of Thrones is an addiction, but it’s the sort of addiction
that needs no intervention.

gone right back to what makes
this universe so cool: the shades of
grey, something absent from the
moral absolutism of the prequels.
With two of the main characters
exhibiting different combinations of
Han and Luke (and maybe a bit of
Kyle Katarn too), Star Wars: Rebels
looks like an awesome precursor for
the old-school values we long to see
in Star Wars: Episode VII.
