enemies.
No
weapon
system
has
had
more
impact
on
the
battlefield
than
the
tank.
It
was
a
fearsome
and
revolutionary
new
weapon,
combining
the
three
basic
essentials
of
firepower,
protection
and
mobility.
These
characteristics
can
be
applied
to
every
tank
and
it is
the
degree
of
emphasis
the
designer
places
upon
each
of
them
which
determines
the
size,
shape
and
weight
of
the
resulting
armoured
fighting
vehicle.
As
the

this
book
show,
the
results
can
vary
dramatically
and
have
done
so
over
the
seven
decades
since
the
first
tank
appeared
in
1915.
The
tank
has,
during
two
world
wars,
revolutionised
close
combat,
from
its
shaky
start
in
thebloodbathof
the
Western
Front
in
1916,
through
all
the
hesitancy
and
bitter
argument
between
the
wars,
to
its
eventual
virtual
domination
of
the
battlefield
in
World
War
2
when
it
became
the
main
weapon
of
the
land
army.
This
fascinating
story
is
graphically
traced
within
the
wealth
of
photographs
in
this
book.
They
contain
plenty
of
action
and
human
interest,
and
much
to
appeal
to
the
technician
and
the
modeller.
Many
derivations
of
the
basic
tank
ave
been
deliberately
included,
such
as
tank
destroyers,
self-propelled
guns,
armoured
engineer
and
armoured
recovery
vehicles,
together
with
many
examples
of
specialised
armour,
in
order
to
show
the
versatility
of
the
tank
designer.
In
this
collection
of
500
photographs
can
be
found
examples
of
armoured
fighting
vehicles
from
all
over
the
world, covering
the
history
of
the
tank
from
191
5
to
the
present
day.
The
photographs
all
come
from
a
remarkable
collection
owned
by
the
well-known
graphic
artist,
John
Batchelor,
whose
cutaway
drawings
of
ships,
aeroplanes
and
vehicles
are
to
be
found
in
many
different
books
and
magazines
all
over
the
world.
They
are
but
a
small
part
of
his
clearly
immense
collection
than
words
the
evolution
of
system.

far
