Lesson 19

N. Αγαπητοί ακροατές, χαίρετε. In the last few lessons we talked, among other things, about forms showing possession, about the genitive case of nouns. Here’s a quick revision of these forms. Let’s begin with the neuters.

A. Το δωμάτιο, του δωματίου.              The room, of the room.             

E. Τα παράθυρα του δωματίου μου είναι μεγάλα.              The windows of my room are large.

Α. Το σπίτι, του σπιτιού.              The house, of the house.

Ε. Το κλειδί του σπιτιού μου είναι στο αυτοκίνητο.              The key of my house is in the car.

Ν. Now the masculines.

A. Ο αδερφός, του αδερφού              The brother, of the brother.

E. Ο Νίκος είναι φίλος του αδερφού μου.              Nikos is a friend of my brother.

A. Ο πατέρας, του πατέρα.              The father, of the father.

E. Διαβάζω το γράμμα του πατέρα μου.              I read the letter of my father.

A. Ο Αντώνης, του Αντώνη              Anthony, of Anthony.

E. Πηγαίνω στο σπίτι του Αντώνη.              I go to Anthony's house.

N. And the feminines.

A. Η μητέρα, της μητέρας              The mother, of the mother.

E. Το βιβλίο αυτό είναι της μητέρας μου.              This book is my mother's.

A. Η αδερφή, της αδερφής              The sister, of the sister.

E. Η Ελένη είναι φίλη της αδερφής μου.              Eleni is a friend of my sister.

N. We learned also to ask questions with the word ποιος,
ποια, ποιο, who? But the question word which really brings
out the genitive form is τίνος -- whose? -- τίνος. Listen.

A. Τίνος είναι ο σκύλος;              Whose is the dog?

N. Whose is the dog?

E. Είναι του φίλου μου.              It is my friend's. (It is of my friend)

A. Τίνος είναι αυτή η φωτογραφία;              Of whom is this photograph?

E. Είναι της αδερφής μου.              It is of my sister.

Α. Τίνος είναι το αυτοκίνητο εκεί έξω;              Whose is the car there, oustide?

Ε. Είναι του κυρίου Πετρίδη.              It is Mr. Petrithis' (car). (It is of Mr. Petrithis).

Α. Τίνος είναι αυτά τα γράμματα;              Whose are these letters?

Ε. Είναι της κόρης μου.              They are my daughter's.

Α. Το κλειδί εκείνο, τίνος είναι, του σπιτιού σου ή του              The key there, to what does it belong**, your
αυτοκινήτου σου;              house or your car?  (**of what is it?)

Ε. Είναι του σπιτιού μου.              It is of my house.

Ν. The use of τίνος is easy and clear, I think, but to give you             
the chance to use it yourselves, here’s a simple exercise.
Andreas will give you a statement, and you will ask a question
based on it using the word τίνος. Here's the first statement.

A. Η μαύρη πένα είναι της αδερφής μου.              The black pen is my sister's.

E. Τίνος είναι η μαύρη πένα;              Whose is the black pen?

N. Here's another one.

Α. Τα βιβλία είναι του σχολείου.              The books are of the school.

E. Τίνος είναι τα βιβλία;              Whose are the books?

N. Ευχαριστώ, αγαπητοί ακροατές. Andreas points to
a big house in the distance and asks:

A. Εκείνο το μεγάλο σπίτι μακριά, Έλλη, τίνος είναι;              There, the big house, far away, Ellie, whose is it?

Ν. Ellie knows it belongs to a rich gentleman, but she doesn’t
know his name. Listen to her answer.

E. Είναι ενός πλούσιου κυρίου. Δεν ξέρω το όνομά του.              It is one rich man's.  I don't know his name.

Ν. Ενός πλούσιου κυρίου, she said, of one rich gentleman.
Number one, ένα, you remember, behaves like a regular
adjective, with different endings according to gender: ένας,
μια, ένα. It has genitive forms, too: ενός, μιας, ενός.

Ε. Ενός ανθρώπου, μιας γυναίκας, ενός παιδιού.              Of one person, of one woman, of one child.

Ν. Please repeat the following sentences.             

A. Πηγαίνω στο σπίτι ενός φίλου μου.              I go to the house of one friend of mine.

E. Βλέπω το αυτοκίνητο μιας φίλης μου.              I see the car of one friend (f.) of mine.

Α. Αυτή είναι η φωτογραφία ενός μικρού κοριτσιού.              This is the photograph of one little girl.

Ε. Εδώ μένει η οικογένεια ενός καλού ανθρώπου.              Here stays the family of one good person.

Α. Βλέπω τα παράθυρα ενός σπιτιού.              I see the windows of one house.

Ε. Δεν θέλω τα χρήματα μιας φτωχής γυναίκας.              I don't want the money of a poor woman.

Α. Ο Αντώνης είναι γιος ενός καλού πατέρα.              Anthony is the son of one good father.

Ν. Thank you, listeners. In all the questions with τίνος that
you have heard, the objects belonged to persons other than
Ellie and Andreas, so they couldn’t use words like mine, yours,
his, hers, etc. Listen to the following examples.

E. Τίνος είναι το γράμμα αυτό;              Whose is this letter?

N. Whose is this letter?

A. Είναι δικό μου.              It's mine.

N. It’s mine.

E. Τίνος είναι το τσιγάρο;              Whose is the cigarette?

A. Είναι δικό σου, Έλλη.              It is yours, Ellie.

N. It’s yours.

E. Δικό μου;              Mine?

A. Ναι, είναι δικό σου. Να το δικό μου, εδώ.              Yes, it is yours.  Here is my own, here.

N. Δικό μου, δικό σου, δικό του, δικό της, δικό μας,
δικό σας, δικό τους. Of many things of the neuter gender
we say δικά μου, δικά σου, and so on. Δικό, δικά.

Ε. Τα γράμματα είναι δικά μου.              The letters are mine.

Α. Τα σπίρτα αυτά δεν είναι δικά μου, είναι δικά σου.              These matches are not mine, they are yours.

Ε. Τα χρήματα είναι δικά τους.              The money is theirs.

Α. Πηγαίνουμε με δικά μας αυτοκίνητα.              We go with our own cars.

Ε. Τα φορέματα είναι δικά της.              The dresses are hers.

Ν. The word δικό is an adjective, so it has the usual endings:
δικός for masculines, δική for feminines, δικό for neuters.

E. Η καρέκλα αυτή είναι δική μου.              This chair is mine.

A. Η φωτογραφία είναι δική μου.              The photograph is my own.

Ε. Ο σκύλος δεν είναι δικός σου, είναι του φίλου σου.              The dog is not yours, it is your friend's (dog).

Α. Ο δικός μου φίλος είναι πλούσιος.              My friend is wealthy.

N. In the following sentences, which I will ask you to repeat,
δικός, δική, or δικό can be translated as mine, yours, etc.

E. Το σπίτι με τα μπλε παράθυρα είναι δικό μου.              The house with the blue windows is mine.

A. Η μαύρη πένα είναι δική μου.              The black pen is mine.
alt: Το μαύρο στυλό είναι δικό μου.             

E. Ο κήπος με τα πολλά λουλούδια είναι δικός μου.              The garden with the many flowers is mine.

A. Τα μαλλιά μου είναι καστανά. Τα δικά σου είναι ξανθά.              My hair is brown.  Yours is blonde.

E. Το στόμα μου είναι μικρό. Το δικό σου είναι μεγάλο.              My mouth is small.  Yours is large.

N. Thank you, listeners. Ο δικός μου, η δική μου, το δικό
μου in the following sentences are forms of more emphatic
possession: το δικό μου σπίτι is my house with the word
my underlined. Please listen and repeat.

A. O δικός μου σκύλος είναι μαύρος.               My dog is black.  He is not white.
Δεν είναι άσπρος.             

E. Θέλω το δικό μου μολύβι, όχι το δικό σου.              I want my pencil, not yours.

A. Η δική μου μύτη είναι μεγάλη.               My nose is large.  Yours is small
Η δική σου είναι μικρή.              .

E. Η δική μου καρέκλα είναι κοντά στο παράθυρο.              My chair is near to the window.

A. Το δικό μου ποτήρι έχει κρασί, όχι κονιάκ.              My glass has wine, not cognac.

N. The word δικό can also, in some sentences, be translated
into English as my own, your own, etc. Listen to the following.

E. Η μητέρα μου θέλει δικό της σπίτι.              My mother wants a house of her own.

N. My mother wants a house of her own.

A. Δεν έχω δικό μου ποδήλατο. Αυτό είναι του               I do not have my own bicycle.  This is my friend's.
φίλου μου.

E. Θέλει δική του πένα ο γιος μου.              He wants his own pen, my son.

N. Time for a little exercise, now. You will be given a
sentence to which you will add δικός, δική, ή δικό
according to the gender of the word. If the given
sentence is Το μολύβι είναι του αδερφού μου,
you will add Είναι δικό του. Αre you ready?

E. Το πουκάμισο είναι του πατέρα μου.              The shirt is my father's.
