In spite of the beauty of its lines, the Luchs isn’t a frequent visitor to specialized publi-
cations, shows or contests. Fortunately there are always modelers with an excellent taste
and know how able to rescue such gems from the mists of forgetfulness. There is also a
great deal of guts on this kit, because we’re not all capable of running the risks of doing a
mud and dirt job like the one Fabrizio has done. The piece also has an undeniable charm,
which is the fruit of the contrast between these effects and its NATO camouflage.

And talking about peculiar vehicles, here we have another one: A transport
truck with added armoring which is by itself quite a “refreshing” piece.
Other than the seldom seen subject of this article we also greatly appreciate
how Pablo has achieved such a realistic appearance for his vehicle, using
methods and means which are all quite simple and available to most mod-
elers. I’m sure that you will learn a lot from this particular article.

PANZERHAUBITZE 2000 (PZH2000)
We’re used to seeing every once in a while an outstanding kit of this self-propelled
piece of artillery painted with the traditional NATO camouflage, but Carlos was
determined to recreate it with the desert camouflage employed in Afghanistan. In
spite of being a difficult job, he’s also succeeded in making a camouflage with a
number of very realistic weathering effects.

We certainly don’t see ambulances very often in our pages, but we’ve certainly never
seen one with Chinese colors on an Iraqi vehicle. Additionally, this has been “sea-
soned” with dirt and corrosion effects which are quite original. This kit is the way
we’ve chosen to introduce Jean-Jacques to our magazine.

You really have to muster large doses of patience and a lot of guts in
order to assemble a kit like the Smerch. It is never easy to deal with kits in this size
and make them look attractive, realistic and cool looking like Domingo has succeeded in

The Spähpanzer Luchs (lynx) is an amphibious
combat armored 8x8 vehicle, designed for
reconnaissance missions requiring its amphibious
properties. The vehicle has been serving the
German Army since 1975, specifically inside of
the German reconnaissance battalions which in
its heyday had 408 units. It was developed by
Daimler-Benz between 1968 and 1975 and it was
meant to replace the M41 and the Schutzenpanzer
SPz 11-2Kurz.
This full traction Luchs was manufactured
by Thyssen-Henschel (now Rheinmetall). The
vehicle has a rather decent
armoring, NBC protection and it
is quite silent. The large wheels
with low air pressure can modify at will this
very same air pressure according to the specific
situational needs. The vehicle has four axles
and these are moveable up to 50km per hour.
The rear driver’s post is another noteworthy
feature in this vehicle. The vehicle after
the improvements incorporated from
1986 onwards became an amphibious
vehicle capable to wade across
easily bodies of water using its
rear propellers and its frontal
collapsible breakwater. The
vehicle has a 20mm MK
20Rh. 202 Rheinmetall
gun similar to the Marder’s
IFV. The upgrading of the
Luchs began in 1986 and some
improvements included a new
aiming system and a thermal
observation system replacing
the old infrared and night vision
systems on the left side of the
turret. The old communications
equipment; the short range VHF
SEM 25/SEM 35 FM by Lorenz,
the long range 100 Watt RF HF
AN/GRC 9 and the LV 80 amplifier
for Morse code transmissions by Rohde
& Schwarz were replaced by the 100 Watt
XK 405 SSB HF and the new SEM 80/90. The
upgraded vehicle was henceforth named SpPz 2
Luchs A2
