From 2004 through 2006 (approximately) I wrote a series of articles for the
CatholicCulture.org site that was intended to both educate and entertain. At the
beginning I was curious as to whether I would be successful in this endeavor.
Up to that point I had done a great deal of professional writing for marketing
purposes, but very little Catholic commentary in such a large forum as that website.
However, I was armed with a good and well-rounded Catholic education, a decade spent
closely following Catholic world events, the best intentions, and most importantly, a
good editor.
New writers release their work with trembling and apprehension. You don’t know
what to expect from your editor or from the public. Over time I learned what to expect
from my editor—and it required less labor to produce each article (and therefore
provided me with more enjoyment).
Nowadays I can write without an editor and only have to worry about grammar and
punctuation. In early 2004 if I wrote without an editor a few of my articles would have
“gone viral”—but not for good reasons. My writing career at CatholicCulture.org would
have exploded like this summer’s fireworks display in San Diego—a brief period of
intense light, heat, and noise, followed by darkness and a bewildered angry audience
ready to lynch the producers. (Google “Fireworks San Diego” if you don’t know what I
am talking about.)
Mind you, I never intended to produce any such result…but when you are a new
writer sometimes you end up making the exact opposite of the point you originally
intended, and in doing so risk offending large groups of concerned Catholics. That is the
value of having a good editor. So when you read my work from that early period and
think, “Hey, this is a good article”—remember that it was very much a joint effort.
So my editor was satisfied with (and reconciled to) me, and me to my editor.
However, I couldn’t make heads or tails of what the public thought!
I learned pretty quickly that the public is not “the public”—but rather unique
individuals reading, experiencing, and responding to what I wrote. I received thousands
of emails about my articles during those three years, mostly approving and encouraging
but some disapproving and discouraging.
