I
love to travel. My wife knows that during each vacation I often begin to plan and anticipate the next
one. For us there has always been a problem associated with travel…what to do with the family pet.
We have always had a dog and thus have had to make arrangements for the care of our pet during our
absence, often for three weeks or more. Then, while we were away, we would wonder how our dog was
doing. We frequently wished our dog were with us, particularly when our trips lasted two weeks or more.
The solution finally occurred to me: take Izzy along!
I would admit that taking Izzy, our six-pound Maltese, presents a different scenario than taking our
previous pet, a 140-pound Rottweiler. With such a small dog, we were optimistic that we would be able
to travel and take Izzy along. When we started looking for destinations, we could not find the specific
regulations for our proposed destinations. We also found that there was no single source for finding
information on whether or not pets were allowed into a certain country. Realizing other travelers with
pets might have similar questions about traveling internationally and thus appreciate a resource to help
them explore the possibilities, I came up with the idea for this book.
I hope that you will consider traveling internationally with your pet and that this book will provide useful
information as you pursue a new travel adventure. The information provided in this book was verified as
much as possible before publication. I have included as many countries of the world as I could. Only two
countries did not reply after repeated attempts to obtain information about importing pets. Most tourist
offices flooded my mailbox with beautiful brochures and applications for visas. I strongly recommend
contacting the tourist offices, airlines, hotels, and other sources listed in this book before leaving home.
Your mailbox may suddenly have an influx of brochures.
The main thing to remember about traveling with your pet is to plan as much as you can while at home to
have as much fun as you can while away. Whether you travel for business, education, pleasure, or a
combination, have fun and enjoy.
